Vanadium is a silver-grey transition metal known for its strength and resistance to corrosion. It is extracted from vanadium-bearing magnetite ores and is also obtained as a byproduct from the processing of other ores, such as uranium and titanium. The leading producers of vanadium are China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa.Vanadium is mainly used in steel alloys, battery technologies, and aerospace applications.

Vanadium is extracted from vanadium-bearing magnetite ores or as a byproduct from steel slag. The ore is processed through crushing, milling, and magnetic separation to concentrate the vanadium. It is then refined into vanadium pentoxide, which is either used directly in battery applications or further processed into ferrovanadium for use in steelmaking.

Vanadium is primarily used in steel production (~85%), where it enhances the strength and corrosion resistance of high-performance steel alloys. It is also used in vanadium redox flow batteries (~10%) for energy storage and in the aerospace industry (~5%) for producing lightweight, durable alloys. Ferrovanadium and vanadium pentoxide are the key materials traded for these applications.
