Vanadium
NextIntroduction
Vanadium is a silver-grey transition metal known for its strength and resistance to corrosion. It is extracted from vanadium-bearing magnetite ores and is also obtained as a byproduct from the processing of other ores, such as uranium and titanium. The leading producers of vanadium are China, Russia, Brazil and South Africa.Vanadium is mainly used in steel alloys, battery technologies, and aerospace applications.

How can Metalshub help in buying and selling vanadium?
Metalshub provides producers and consumers of vanadium with a software solution to improve the way they buy or sell it. Our software connects over 2,000 companies in a joint trading network. This allows sellers to discover new buyers of vanadium and buyers to discover new suppliers of vanadium.
For buyers, Metalshub’s Procurement Solution allows steel mills, foundries, and other consumers to digitalise their procurement process in order to increase sourcing efficiency, ensure compliant buying, and take data-driven decisions. For sellers, Metalshub’s Sales Solution allows miners, traders, and other sellers to digitalise their sales process, manage inventory, and optimise their sales book.
What is the price of vanadium?
Prices for vanadium are available from several key providers:
- Argus Media: Argus journalistically tracks vanadium prices, offering data for various forms such as ferrovanadium and vanadium pentoxide (Argus Media).
- Shanghai Metals Market (SMM): SMM provides daily journalistic updates for vanadium products, primarily focused on the Chinese market, covering products like vanadium nitrogen alloys and ferrovanadium (Fastmarkets).
- Metis: For ferrovanadium robust transaction-based price data is made available by Metis. The prices are adjusted considering FCA warehouse in a major European sea port and prepayment (Metis).
Beyond these three examples, other providers may also provide prices.
What are the key countries of origin for vanadium?
The leading producers of vanadium are:
- China – ~55% of global vanadium production
- Russia – ~20% of global vanadium production
- South Africa – ~15% of global vanadium production
- Brazil – ~5% of global vanadium production
- United States – ~<5% of global vanadium production
Who are some of the key producers of vanadium?
Some of the key producers of vanadium include:
- Evraz Group (Russia) – ~25% of global vanadium production
- Bushveld Minerals (South Africa) – ~15% of global vanadium production
- Glencore (Switzerland) – ~<15% of global vanadium production
- Largo Resources (Brazil) – ~10% of global vanadium production
- AMG Vanadium (USA) – ~<10% of global vanadium production
How is vanadium mined and produced?
Vanadium is extracted from vanadium-bearing magnetite ores or as a byproduct from steel slag. The ore is processed through crushing, milling, and magnetic separation to concentrate the vanadium. It is then refined into vanadium pentoxide, which is either used directly in battery applications or further processed into ferrovanadium for use in steelmaking.
What is vanadium used for?
Vanadium is primarily used in steel production (~85%), where it enhances the strength and corrosion resistance of high-performance steel alloys. It is also used in vanadium redox flow batteries (~10%) for energy storage and in the aerospace industry (~5%) for producing lightweight, durable alloys. Ferrovanadium and vanadium pentoxide are the key materials traded for these applications.
